History of Zouch
Zouch is a small hamlet on the banks of the River Soar in Nottinghamshire, near the Leicestershire border. The unusual name derives from the Norman-French 'souche', meaning 'tree stump' or 'stock', and is associated with the de la Zouche family who held the local manor in medieval times. Zouch sits at an important crossing point of the River Soar, and its pub, The Rose and Crown, has served travellers here for centuries. The hamlet is part of the wider Soar valley landscape, where the river meanders through flat, marshy ground that is rich in wildlife. Despite its small size, Zouch's attractive riverside setting and historic pub make it a popular destination for walkers and boaters on the Soar Navigation.
