History of Woodthorpe
Woodthorpe is a residential suburb in the north of Nottingham, located between Mapperley and Arnold. The name is of Old Norse origin, meaning 'outlying farm in a wood'. Woodthorpe was a small rural hamlet until the 20th century, when Nottingham's suburban expansion absorbed it into the city. Woodthorpe Grange Park, a popular public park, was originally the grounds of Woodthorpe Grange, a Victorian gentleman's residence. The park features ornamental gardens, a miniature railway, a café, and sports facilities, and is one of the most popular green spaces in north Nottingham. Today Woodthorpe is a well-established residential area with good local amenities and easy access to Nottingham city centre.
