History of Woodborough
Woodborough is a village in the Gedling district of Nottinghamshire, located about seven miles north-east of Nottingham in the valley between Calverton and Lowdham. The name means 'fortified place in a wood'. Woodborough has a rich history of framework knitting, which was the village's main industry during the 18th and 19th centuries — several framework knitters' cottages, with their distinctive wide upper windows for light, survive today. The Church of St Swithun dates from the medieval period and contains Norman features. Woodborough is known for its attractive setting in a sheltered valley, its strong community spirit, and its annual Flower and Vegetable Show. The village has remained relatively unchanged in character despite some modern development.
