History of Wigthorpe
Wigthorpe is a tiny hamlet in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire, located in the rural area between Worksop and Retford. The name is of Old Norse origin, meaning 'Wig's outlying farm', reflecting Viking settlement in this region. Wigthorpe has been a small agricultural settlement throughout its history, consisting of a handful of farms and cottages. The surrounding landscape is one of open farmland with scattered woodland, part of the transition zone between the Sherwood Forest area to the south and the flatter Trent valley to the east. Wigthorpe's tiny size and remote position have preserved its character as a quintessential Nottinghamshire hamlet.
