History of Westville
Westville is a small residential area in Nottinghamshire, situated near Eastwood and Jacksdale in the western part of the county. The name simply means 'west village' or 'western settlement'. The area developed during the 19th and 20th centuries in connection with the coal mining industry that dominated the Nottinghamshire-Derbyshire coalfield. Several collieries operated in the surrounding area, and the community grew to house mining families. The proximity of the D. H. Lawrence connection — Lawrence was born in nearby Eastwood and used the local landscape extensively in his novels — gives the area literary significance. Today Westville is a quiet residential settlement surrounded by green countryside.
