History of West Burton
West Burton is a small village in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire, situated on the west bank of the River Trent. The name means 'western fortified farmstead'. West Burton is widely known for its power station, West Burton A, a coal-fired station that began generating electricity in 1968 and whose massive cooling towers are visible for miles across the flat Trent valley. The power station closed in 2022 as part of the UK's transition away from coal. The village itself predates the power station by centuries and retains a few traditional farmhouses and cottages. The Trent valley location provides flat, fertile agricultural land and expansive views.
