History of Wallingwells
Wallingwells is a small settlement in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire, known primarily for Wallingwells Priory, a former Benedictine nunnery founded in the 12th century. The Priory was dissolved during the Reformation and subsequently converted into a country house. The name means 'wells of Walh's people' or possibly 'wells of the Britons' in Old English. Wallingwells sits in the attractive, wooded countryside of northern Nottinghamshire, within the historic Dukeries area. The settlement has always been small, its identity tied to the priory and later country house estate. The surrounding woodland and parkland provide beautiful walking country.
