History of Sutton cum Granby
Sutton cum Granby is a small parish and settlement in the Vale of Belvoir area of the Rushcliffe district in Nottinghamshire. The name combines two old settlements: 'Sutton', meaning 'southern farmstead', and 'Granby', meaning 'Grandi's farmstead' (from Old Norse). The Marquesses of Granby, part of the Manners family of Belvoir Castle, took their title from this place. The area is characterised by the gently rolling farmland of the Vale of Belvoir, one of the most productive agricultural landscapes in the East Midlands. The villages retain traditional character with stone and brick cottages, and the area is known for its connections to Stilton cheese production.
