History of Skegby
Skegby is a village in the Ashfield district of Nottinghamshire, now effectively part of the town of Sutton-in-Ashfield. The name is of Old Norse origin, meaning 'Skeggi's farmstead', evidence of Viking settlement in this area. Skegby is recorded in the Domesday Book and has a medieval church, All Saints, dating from the 12th century with notable features including a Norman doorway. The village was traditionally agricultural but became closely associated with coal mining during the 19th and 20th centuries, with Skegby Colliery operating nearby. Today Skegby is a residential area that retains its village identity within the larger Ashfield urban area, with its historic church and older buildings providing a link to its long past.
