History of Little Gringley
Little Gringley is a tiny hamlet in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire, situated in the flat agricultural countryside north of Retford. The name is of Old English origin, meaning 'green clearing' with 'Little' distinguishing it from the nearby (and also small) hamlet of Gringley on the Hill. Little Gringley has been a small agricultural settlement for centuries, working the heavy clay soils of this part of the county. The hamlet consists of just a few houses and farms. Nearby Gringley on the Hill offers panoramic views across the Trent valley from its elevated position. This area of northern Nottinghamshire has a distinctly rural, unspoilt character.
