History of Little Carlton
Little Carlton is a small hamlet in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire, located near the village of South Leverton in the Trent valley. Despite its small size, Little Carlton has gained national fame through remarkable archaeological discoveries. Excavations have uncovered a significant Anglo-Saxon settlement with high-status metalwork finds, including ornate gilt brooches and a rare stylus, suggesting it was once a place of some importance — possibly a monastic site. The hamlet's name means 'small settlement of the free peasants', from Old English. Today Little Carlton is a quiet farming hamlet, but its archaeological significance makes it one of the most important early medieval sites in Nottinghamshire.
