History of Lenton
Lenton is an inner-city area of Nottingham, located just west of the city centre. It has a long and significant history: Lenton Priory, a Cluniac monastery founded around 1102 by William Peverel, was one of the most important religious houses in medieval Nottinghamshire. The priory was dissolved in 1538 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and little of the original structure remains. Lenton developed as a residential area during the 19th century and today has a large student population due to its proximity to the University of Nottingham. Lenton is also home to the famous Nottingham Goose Fair site at the Forest Recreation Ground, one of Europe's oldest travelling funfairs, dating back to the 13th century.
