Holbeck Woodhouse is a small village in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire, located near the Dukeries area of Sherwood Forest. The name combines 'Holbeck', meaning 'stream in a hollow', with 'Woodhouse', referring to a house in or near a wood. The village sits in an area of great historical significance — nearby Creswell Crags contains caves with Ice Age art, some of the oldest known in Britain. Holbeck Woodhouse has been a small rural community throughout its history, associated with farming and, later, the great landed estates of the Dukeries.
