History of Haywood Oaks
Haywood Oaks is a small hamlet and area of woodland in the Newark and Sherwood district of Nottinghamshire, located within the historic bounds of Sherwood Forest. The name combines 'haywood', meaning an enclosed woodland, with 'oaks', reflecting the predominant tree species. This area has been woodland since at least the medieval period, when it formed part of the royal hunting forest of Sherwood. The ancient oaks of Haywood Oaks are among the most impressive in the Sherwood Forest area, with some trees estimated to be several hundred years old. Today the area is managed for conservation and is popular with walkers, nature enthusiasts, and those exploring the Robin Hood heritage of Nottinghamshire.
