History of Haughton
Haughton is a small village in the Newark and Sherwood district of Nottinghamshire. The name derives from the Old English 'halh-tun', meaning 'farmstead in a nook or hollow'. Haughton has been an agricultural settlement since medieval times, positioned in the gently rolling countryside of central Nottinghamshire. The village is recorded in early medieval documents and was part of the wider agricultural economy that supported the market town of Southwell and, further afield, the great monasteries. Haughton's peaceful atmosphere and traditional cottages reflect centuries of continuity in this part of rural England.
