History of Clifton
Clifton is a large suburb on the southern edge of Nottingham, situated on elevated ground above the River Trent. The name means 'settlement on a cliff or steep bank' in Old English, referring to the bluffs above the river. Clifton has ancient origins; archaeological finds include Neolithic and Bronze Age artefacts. The historic Clifton village, centred around Clifton Hall and the medieval Church of St Mary, dates back to at least the Domesday Book. In the 1950s, Nottingham City Council built the Clifton Estate, one of the largest council housing developments in Europe at the time, dramatically expanding the population. The Nottingham Trent University Clifton Campus is also located here.
